Qualifying for Social Security Disability

Quarters, quarters, quarters, whose got the quarters? And when?

If applying for Social Security Disability Benefits based on what you have paid into Social Security while working, most of us know you have to work for a certain length of time before being “vested” or eligible to draw Social Security.

Under Social Security rules you must have worked for 40 quarters to be eligible or fully insured to draw disability on your own record.

But, there is also another requirement you may not, but should know. If you don’t have 10 quarters out of the last 20 vested, or to put it more simply, if you haven’t worked in over 5 years, you may lose your eligibility to draw SSD benefits until reaching retirement age. Make sure you know when your entitlement lapses.
